Celebrating International Women's Day Around the World
Happy International Women's Day! The 102-year-old holiday returns today in celebration of a worldwide movement towards total gender equality. March 8has been circled on calendars since 1911, when the first International Women's Day was held amongst a rather progressive crowd of early 20thcentury ladies. The holiday's inaugural festivities were minimalwomen in four European nations organized marches to direct the world's attention to the importance of women's economic and political equality. One-hundred-and-two years later, the holiday has evolved to a much grander movement, involving not only celebration, but action. Today, International Women's Day participants can be found everywhere, from Washington, DC to Pakistan and beyond.
The ways in which women are celebrating and getting involved this year are countless and unique. Washington, DC organized a large-scale parade commemorating losses in the War on Women, followed by a tribute to those still overseas in the Mommy Wars. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will be hosting a guided bus tour to the "Special Place in Hell For Women Who Don't Help Our Other Women," also in Washington, DC; and a short film documenting the stories of four inspirational career women will play all day in the display windows of London's high-end department store Selfridges & Co.
International Women's Day also recognizes the incredible progress and accomplishments of females around the world. CNN called attention to an amazing 15-year-old Pakistani girl named Malala Yousafzai, who became the youngest Nobel Peace Prize nominee in history this year, by risking her life for the cause of girls' education. The Huffington Posthighlighted some of the many women who have helped bring computer science education into the next generation, in a world where only three percent of tech startups are led by women. There is certainly no shortage of ground-breaking ladies to celebrate and honor this Friday.
