How to lay a brick?

In this article, we will tell those who decided to start building themselves on how to properly lay a brick. For a long time and to this day almost no summer resident can do without brick laying, because brick is a universal stone. Since, some hundreds of years ago, some ancient builders managed to find a recipe for burning bricks, brick has become one of the most popular building materials in the world. Now we will describe the process of laying brick step by step and begin, naturally, with a mortar.

Preparation of the solution

For the laying of bricks, sand-cement mortar is usually used in the following proportion: 5 parts of sand have 1 part of cement. What is it for? A mortar is required in order to avoid the displacement of bricks. However, such a solution is quite viscous and in order to give it greater fluidity, it is often added 1 part of clay, lime, or even liquid soap. However, such a recipe is not suitable for laying hollow bricks, because the flowing solution will leak into the voids of the brick and thus degrade the insulating properties of the material.

The masonry mix is prepared by mixing sand and cement, first dry, and only then it is gradually begun to add water to the desired thickness. If you do not have to put too many bricks and you work alone, then prepare the mixture gradually for each small batch. The fact is that the mortar is consumed rather slowly and simply does not make sense to prepare more than 20-30 liters of mortar at a time, especially if you do not yet have sufficient practical skills in laying bricks. Use one batch of solution, then prepare the next.

Required tools

The most important tool of the bricklayer is a trowel. With the help of the trowel, you will apply the mortar to the bricks, select the extruded mortar when fitting the bricks, and also level the already laid bricks with the trowel handle.

The next tool - Bulgarian or cutting machine. To her need cutting discs on the stone. The Bulgarian will help you to cut or cut a brick with accuracy.

If there is no grinder, then the so-called pickaxe (a hammer with a sharpened striker) will also work, which will allow splitting bricks.

And a couple more necessary tools for laying bricks: plumb and construction level. With their help you will check the accuracy of the laying.

How to lay a brick: start laying

As a rule, beginning bricklayers have two difficulties when laying bricks:

  1. Derivation of vertical right angles.
  2. Laying bricks on one level in a straight line.

Before laying a brick, well tell you how to avoid these problems. To do this, you must fulfill the following conditions.

Firstly, and this is the main point when laying, try to lay the first row of bricks as straight as possible. To make it straight and level, you can use, for example, a long rail, a tensioned cord, or a rule as guide lines. Laying the bricks is necessary so that there is a gap of approximately 3 mm between the brick row and the guide, because otherwise the solution will put pressure on it.

Secondly, to check the horizontal masonry, use the level.

And third, do not forget to check the neighboring bricks so that there are no deviations in the horizontal and vertical planes. It is especially important to properly perform the facial laying.

The methods of execution of the seam

If the wall will later be plastered, apply the method called "in the wasteland." In this case, the solution is not brought to the outer edge of the brick, leaving a small gap. The fact is that the plaster, when leaking into such a gap, it is better kept on the wall.

If you are laying an oven or a chimney, you need to apply the "undercut" method. In this case, the gap is filled with a solution flush with the edges of the brick. This will give the inner surface of the stove or chimney smoothness, and soot will not accumulate on it. Also such jointing is used sometimes for decorative purposes.

A purely decorative function has a concave or convex seam between the bricks. In order to obtain a concave seam of the solution, you can use a stick or tube. And for a convex seam, you need to cut the tube lengthwise and apply it to the seam so that the seam of the solution takes a convex shape, and then remove.

Display angles

The corners in the brickwork should be laid out first. They must also be above the walls themselves. This is done so that there are so-called lighthouses or reper, with which you can pull the mooring cords, which mark the height and line of laying. To the cord-wharf does not sag, you need to tighten it tight enough.

It should be noted that correctly laid out corners more than half ensure the accuracy of the masonry of the rest of the structure, so pay special attention to this.

The order is flat metal corners that allow you to very accurately display the required rectangular angles. In order to establish order in the corners, you must first lay a few bricks using a level. After that, you can fix the order that is done with the help of so-called clamps or special brackets. Further, the accuracy of the order is checked by a plumb or a level, after which you can tighten the cord-mooring.

With a small length of the wall, you can use a long aluminum profile instead of a mooring. It provides exceptional accuracy for horizontal rectilinear masonry.

Additional tips on how to put a brick

First, do not forget to tie up the bricks and remember that the seams in the adjacent rows should by no means coincide.

Secondly, remember that you need to lay the reinforcing mesh for every 5 rows of bricks. If you have a question, how to lay a facing brick, then the rules are the same as when laying the usual one.We can only say that facing brick is different in that it has a smaller size and performs a purely decorative function.

Next: before starting to work on laying bricks, draw a laying plan, count the number of rows and the approximate number of bricks. At the same time, proceed from the size of the bricks, which in the standard version are 25x12x6 cm. Do not forget about a reserve of 10% - the brick may break when laying.

Before laying on the mortar, try to first lay the bricks dry - this will help you identify possible shortcomings.

Also immediately before laying on the solution, moisten the bricks in water - dip them in a bucket of water or in another container.

And, of course, do not hurry! The solution dries out slowly enough, so you will have a lot of time to fix the laying. If there is a desire, watch the video, how to lay a brick - there are quite a lot of clips on the Internet today on any topic.
