Riverdale's Lili Reinhart and Camila Mendes Say Their Friendship Wasn't Instant
The cast ofRiverdaleclearly get along super well IRL. That's probably why their onscreen chemistry is so fire. But you might be surprised to learn that when it comes to Lili Reinhart and Camila Mendes's real-life friendship, things didn't exactly click from the start.
Lili and Camila chatted withJ-14and shared that their different personalities made the progression of their friendship a little slow. "Our friendship wasn't instant," Camila shared. "We both come from such different backgrounds that I think it took us a while to find some common ground."
Lili made it clear that it wasn't about drama. "Camila and I instantly got along but obviously, like any friendship, it took time to build a bond and get really close to one another," Lili explained.
After working with each other for a year, the girls realized they had a lot more in common than they realized at first. "Once the walls came down and our inner goofballs began to reveal themselves, we were unstoppable," Camila said. "Now it's almost like we speak our own language."
The girls' differences are actually what makes their friendship so strong now. "She and I are very different people, but in a lot of ways it makes us feel more connected in the sense that we can learn from each other," Lili explained.
So what have they taught each other?
"Friends push each other to leave their comfort zones, and Camila has definitely encouraged me to come out of my shell in social situations," Lili shared. "She's a social butterfly and I'm more introverted. It's a good balance."
As for Camila, she says Lili taught her the most important aspect of a friendship. "I've learned from Lili that the true value of a friend lies within their ability to listen," she shared. "A good listener goes a long way."
Now the girls are just happy they can portray a healthy female friendship onRiverdalethat reflects their own.
"At an early age, somehow we're programmed to view other females as threats," Camila explained. "It's important to show them that our differences in appearance and personality should be celebrated, not criticized. Betty and Veronica are clearly very different characters, but their differences are what make them such a strong pair."
"I think growing up, the female friendships that I saw on television were portrayed as catty and vicious," Lili echoed. "Betty and Veronica are both very supportive of one another on our show, which has been important to us from the very beginning. Before we even started filming Season One we knew that we wanted these girls to be best friends and to always there for each other. It wasn't going to be fake."
Well, Betty and Veronica's friendship is definitely convincing to fans! I don't think Lili and Camila could be any more friendship goals if they tried.
