Sailboat Made of Plastic Water Bottles Sails Safely Into Harbor After 9,000-Mile Trip
In March 2010, British environmentalist (and heir to Britain's Rothschild banking fortune) David de Rothschild set out on a trans-Pacific voyage toward The Eastern Pacific Garbage patch—a floating landfill between California and Hawaii twice the size of Texas—to promote the benefits of (and downfalls of not) recycling. But some were unsure his vessel, a 60-ft. sailboat made of 12,000 two-liter plastic bottles (held together by glue made from cashew nut husks and sugarcane, and mesh), would withstand the waters. Alas, 9,000 miles later, after making stops in the waste-strewn Line Islands, Western Samoa and the French territory of New Caledonia, the boat, along with its crew of six, safely sailed into the Sydney Harbor. The Plastiki will be on display at Sydney's Maritime Museum throughout the month.Photo courtesy of Adventure Ecology.

Love Parade Leaves 19 Killed, 511 Injured
At the annual Love Parade music festival held in Duisberg, Germany, this past Saturday, a panic-cum-stampede led to what officials are calling one of the worst modern concert disasters. Though unsure what caused the panic, festival goers attempted to escape by climbing up an unsecure fire escape, which collapsed and caused a trample. Witnesses have reportedly singled out police and private security staff for closing out the only entrance and exit after the festival ground became overcrowded, which caused alarm, though blame hasn't been assigned. Unfortunately, this isn't the first music venue tragedy—remember the 2003 Rhode Island night club event, or the 2000 Pearl Jam concert? In any case, the festival has been canceled indefinitely, and authorities are investigating the allegations of negligent manslaughter.
