In the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District there is an urban-type settlement with the unusual name Urengoy, in which a little more than 10 thousand people live. Where is Urengoy and what are its features?
Features of the location of Urengoy
The village of Urengoy is located in the Purovsky District of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District. It is located on the right bank of the Pur River, not far from the confluence of the Bolshaya Khadyryakha and Evo-Yakha rivers. This is due to the proximity of the village to the river port. In addition, Urengoy is only 70 km from the Arctic Circle.
For the first time, a settlement on the right bank of the Pur River appeared in 1932, therefore Urengoy is a relatively young, but dynamically developing village. Translated from Nenets and Khanty, its name means "tall grass". Already in 1979, the village received the status of an urban-type settlement. This rapid development is due to the discovery of the Urengoi gas field, which is of particular importance not only for Russia, but also for the global gas industry.
Today, in the village of Urengoy, there is an Orthodox Church of the Presentation of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple, two schools, three kindergartens, a children's sports school and a cultural and sports complex.
